St Catherines Win The First Game of The New Season

St. Catherine's played Lifford Celtic in the opening game of the Donegal League on Sunday in Emerald Park, it was a great day for football and the fans were in for a treat with a lot of goals some of which were quality and some great football played by both teams.  The Saints had a chance on twelve minutes when John Enright had a shot that went over the bar, then in the twenty fourth minute the Saints took the lead when the ball came to David Conwell and he was about twenty yards out hit an unstoppable shot that went straight into the top corner of the Lifford goal to make the score 1-0 to the Saints.  The Saints then went 2-0 up when on twenty seven minutes the ball was played out to the wing and Evan Broderick got the ball and he crossed it and there was Brendan Mc Guire who took the ball on his chest and turned and on the half volley hit it and it went straight into the top corner of the Lifford net to make it 2-0 to the Saints.  Lifford had a couple of long shots but they came 2 nothing and the score was 2-0 to the Saints at half time.  The second half started and it was the Saints that started the brighter when on fifty three minutes  from a bad goal kick by the Lifford keeper the ball went straight to David Conwell and he slotted the ball into the Lifford net to make the score 3-0 to the Saints.  Lifford then had a couple of chances but they came to nothing as the Saints defence stayed strong, then on fifty seven minutes the Saints went 4-0 up when the ball came to David Conwell and from a tight angle he put the ball into the Lifford net, then just two minutes later on fifty nine minutes it was that man again David Conwell who got his hat trick when he lobbed the Lifford keeper inside the box to make the score 5-0 to the Saints.  So with time nearly up Stephen Gildea rounded off the scoring for the day when he slotted the ball into the Lifford net on eighty eight minutes to make it 6-0 to the Saints and that was the end of the scoring and the end of the game as the Saints ran out winning 6-0, best for the Saints were David Conwell, Shane O Rourke, team effort from Lifford.
