The Restoration of the ‘Murillo’ Painting for St Mary's Church
The Restoration of the ‘Murillo’ Painting for St Mary's church by Caterina Goodhart, in London, which took 4 years to complete, will cost approximately €40,000, it has been revealed in the Parish Newsletter. As Fr Colm Ó Gallchóir PP said, ruefully; "The sterling rate has not been favourable." Among the costs of the work were visits to the conservation departments of the Louvre in Paris and the Prado in Madrid, as well as to the Wallace Collection in Dulwich Picture Gallery. And, before any repainting could commence, samples of the original paint had to be analysed microscopically, in visible and UV light, and a selection of samples was also analysed with scanning electron microscopy in combination with Energy-dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy. The Murillo Restoration Fund presently stands at €9,090. A beautifully-reproduced A4 print of the restored painting is now available, accompanied by an explanatory flier, for €5. There are also a variety of framed prints available for €15 each, including flier. Contact the Parish Office at 074-973 1013.
