Speech & Language in Donegal

1,331 waiting on Speech and Language assessment or follow on therapies in Donegal –  Eimear Mc Guinness.

-71 on waiting list for 18 months or longer for initial assessment-

New figures released show that 1,331 children and young people are waiting for Speech and Language Therapy assessments or follow on therapies within Co Donegal at present stated Eimear McGuinness, candidate in the forthcoming local elections for the Donegal Municipal Area.

These latest figures show that 673 people are on waiting lists in February this year, with over 70 of them waiting over 18 months for initial assessment alone and another 658 waiting for further therapies within the county at present.

Unfortunately, similar delays and lengthy waiting lists are the case in Occupational Therapy (OP) within County Donegal too, with 435 people waiting for initial assessment at present. The breakdown of those waiting for OP Therapy are 71 children under 5 years of age waiting at present, another 132 between the ages of 5 and 18 years waiting on the list – these are alarming numbers of patients waiting for a basic initial assessment added Eimear.

As part of Budget 2019, the government announced the recruitment of 100 therapists for this year but unfortunately no recruitment has taken place in our HSE region thus far, I was informed that 3 posts are to be filled in June 2019; meantime the waiting lists are ever growing added Eimear.

This is very disappointing as given the increases in waiting lists that we are seeing, these additional posts are urgently needed and should be filled without further delay, I have met numerous parents on the doorsteps that are waiting to get referrals or initial assessments and it is not acceptable that such delays as what we witness for Speech and Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists at present. I genuinely feel for those that are waiting on these lists, waiting for initial assessment is very stressful time for parents as naturally they are anxious to get the best for their children. Action is required in order to clear this backlog, it is not acceptable that people have to wait 18 months in order to get an initial assessment for critical and vital therapies such as speech and language and occupational therapies concluded Eimear Mc Guinness.
